Mercy and Malice

Why didn’t I steal you
before doors were barred,
make a camp under the boughs?
the empty road ahead—
no gas stations, no rest stops,
not even a phone booth to call for help.
Espresso cups clicking into their saucers,
Sudden outbursts of laughter,
And the background hum of Brazilian bees socializing.
